Getting a warm sound from the surdo

If your surdo does not sound very mellow/bass like, and has that tinny sound, then put a nappa on it. With a nappa you can get a very warm sound.Basically a nappa is a piece of material (like fake leatherette) that you can put ontop of the drum's head. You can buy nappas from drum shops (they come in different sizes so just note the size of your drum head), or you can easily make your own:1. buy some leatherette from the fabric shop2. unscrew the surdo rods to release the drum head.3. put the drum head on the leatherette and draw its outline to make sure you cut it the right size. (draw around the head's metal ring to ensure the nappa is big enough to be held down by the drum ring -i.e. the ring that holds the head down- but not too big to make the drum look like it has a table cloth on top!)4. put the head back on the surdo shell5. place the nappa on top of the head,6. put the ring ontop of the nappa and screw the rods back on7. tune the drum(Make sure the nappa is covering the head that you hit!)easy and cheap! and what a warm sound it makes!

Napa (Nappa) Sometimes called "Napa leather".

This is a drum head with two layers, the inner one of thin Mylar, the outer of a thick vinyl/cloth combination called Naugahyde. There is no actual leather in a napa drumhead.drum headA membrane of natural or artificial materials that produces the sound for most drums through vibration. (basically it's the part you hit!)
